"Target quantum singularity torpedoes and fire!" Meagan Bates shouted for about the hundredth time in the last forty-five minutes. A plasma conduit exploded nearby, sending out a white geyser of super-heated gas. Standing, Meagan quickly looked back to see if anyone was injured. Fortunately, the crewman who had been manning the station just a few moments before was standing a few feet away attending to another console, and was not caught in the blast. Another crewman rushed to the console with a fire extinguisher and promptly put out the fire before it could do any further damage. Tearing her gaze away from the chaos behind her, Meagan looked back at the forward view screen to assess the effect her attack had made on the enemy craft and was just in time to see the offending ship be torn apart from the inside by the torpedoes. As Captain Robin Meagan Bates stepped out of the turbolift and onto the bridge of the Enterprise-J, she stared out at the massive black field dotted with tiny pinpricks of light. It seemed to stretch out into infinity, and yet, at the same time, the tiny points of light appeared close enough to touch.
And to think, she mused, one of those points of light is where we are headed, and some of us may not return. It was a sobering thought to be sure, yet unfortunately, not an unfamiliar one. A little over a year ago, Bates and her crew had been at the Battle of Procyon V that had resulted in forcing the Sphere Builders back into whatever dimension they called home.
A little over a year? It seems like it was only a few days ago. She had lost many good friends that day. How many of them had thought the same things she was thinking before they had launched
